OFCTV Hamilton Hurricanes vs Windsor AKO Fratmen 2011 Final Regular Season Game October 23rd 2011
The Windsor AKO Fratmen are Ontario Football Conference regular-season champs for the first time in a decade. The Fratmen rallied from an 11-point deficit at the half to earn a 27-21 win Saturday over the defending-league champion Hamilton Hurricanes at Alumni Field at University of Windsor Stadium."It's huge for us," said AKO fourth-year safety Patrick Wright, whose team missed the playoffs the past two seasons. "All the veterans got together after last season and said it wouldn't happen again."The coaches did a great job scouting (for talent) and the rookies came in and we really gelled. It's like a complete 180-degree turn."The Fratmen and Hurricanes each brought 7-0 records into the final game of the regular season, but AKO was able to rally to secure its first regular-season title since 2001."We were expecting it all year," AKO third-year receiver Joel Archer said. "We were confident going that way after the last couple years when things didn't seem to go our way."But it would be a tough challenge for the Fratmen, who struggled in the first half and lost star receiver Derrick Hurst on the second play of the game with an ankle injury."It was scary at first because we were down 14-3 at the half and not playing well," AKO head coach Mike LaChance said.Hamilton's offence wasn't producing much, but took advantage of some of an AKO turnover and a punt return for a touchdown to grab an 11-point lead."The second half, we just had to calm down because we were moving the ball and their offence really wasn't moving it against our defence," Archer said.Archer pulled in a 59-yard scoring pass from quarterback Christian Hackney to get the Fratmen to within four points early in the third quarter and Wright would then recover a fumble forced by Kaymon Holmes. Hackney then hit Trevor Pomarenski with the go-ahead touchdown."Pomarenski's just a little guy that came in from Winnipeg," said LaChance, who was missing three receivers. "He came in to be the kicker and got beat out by Dan Colella, but that was big for us."Archer added his second touchdown on a one-yard run and Colella added his second field goal in the fourth quarter to seal things and secure that the Fratmen will have home-field advantage through the OFC playoffs."I'm glad we did it this way rather than come out and blow them out," LaChance said. "It was gut-check time and we came back against the defending league champions. It's a good league and it's not easy to come out and win this conference."
