Saskatoon wins Canadian Junior Championship in 29-1 rout over Hamilton
Hamilton's dream of their first junior football championship since 1972 was derailed on Saskatoon's second play from scrimmage.
A 39-yard pass to Chad Braun caught the Hamilton Hurricane defense sleeping, an unexpected opening play from the run-heavy Saskatoon Hilltops.
The Hilltops won their 15th Canadian Junior Football League (CJFL) championships with a 29-1 victory over the Hamilton Hurricanes Saturday afternoon at Ivor Wynne.
Also known as the Little Grey Cup, the Canadian Bowl was a blowout right from the whistle. Saskatoon's Graig Newman had three interceptions on Matt Francis, tying a Canadian Bowl record.
Regan Schuler ran all over the Hurricane defence, rushing for 215 yards on 30 carries and a touchdown.
Hamilton cruised through the Ontario conference championships with a 42-6 victor over the Fratmen in Windsor on the backs of former McMaster running back Ryan Kotar and the Ontario conference receiving leader, Matt Coates.
Through the first half, Coates only had one reception for five yards. He finished with three receptions for 15 yards, and Kotar finished with 73 rushing yards, but the Hamilton offence never found its legs.
Hamilton's only point came on a rouge from a missed field goal at the end of the first half.
